Galaxy Express 999: Maetel
This figurine from my favorite manga and probably one of my five favorite figurines. This is Maetel from 銀河鉄道999 / ginga tetsudou 999 / Galaxy Express 999, often referred to as san kyuu / three nines, here in Japan.
The story is about a young boy from Japan, Tetsurou, who boards an inter-galactic train and has experiences beyond his imagination. He is invited upon the train and chaperoned by Maetel. It is difficult to describe her and in so doing would spoil the joy of reading the manga or watching the animations based upon the books.
The series was written and illustrated by Reiji Matsumoto, who has become a living legend in the manga world for his work on this sweries and others such as Captain Harlock and Space Battleship Yamato. Like any good sci-fi, Matsumoto’s work examines culture and society by putting the characters into unfamiliar surroundings but with understandable situations.
One more thing about this figurine that makes it my favorite…it makes me think of my favorite song by Paul McCartney, She’s Leaving Home, from his Beatles days on side one of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
