XAM-M010-A blue minidisc player from plusminuszero

In Japan is a company known for their minimalist designs in electronics and housewares, called Plusminuszero. It was established by a Japanese designer, Naoto Fukazawa, in partnership with the toy manufacturer Takara. The goods are made of hard plastic, usually have soft lines, always have the plusminuszero logo embedded somewhere on the product, and since it is considered ‘designer’ it is more expensive than the same product being available somewhere else. I think a friend’s description says it best, “plusminuszero is the Ikea of Japan”.

In the spring of 2004, Plusminuszero released a minidisc player, XAM-M010, available in blue and in red. These are rebadged Sharp MD-DS5 players with the Auvi-amp intact. Like Kenwood units, the headphone-out jack is 4-pole but the remote is a converter to 3-pole which guarantees the listener can use any set of headphones. The sound can be adjusted with the bass 0, 1, 2, and 3 settings.

The XAM-M010 measures 16.2 x 75.2 x 80.0 mm and weighs 82 grams without the rechargeable cell inserted and 107 grams with both cell and disc loaded. If you recharge your cell inside the unit, it takes approximately 3.5 hours to give back a maximum playtime of 90 hours.

This came with the largest charge stand I’ve ever seen that didn’t have speakers built-in, 3-pole earbuds, a Sharp-branded rechargeable cell and wall adapter, a spare-cell add-on for a AA-cell, an LCD remote, and felt bag.

Keeping with the company line of minimalist, this unit has no buttons on the body rendering it remote-dependant. The standard pre-Auvi remotes will work with this so if the supplied remote gives up the ghost before the unit, no problem.

Taking a look at the unit going counter-clockwise…
