MDR-EX90SL and MDR-EX90LP
Since 2006, earbuds with a rubber gasket to create a sound seal has become the most popular choice of phones for portable audio. What was once a niche has now become the standard. The sound quality is what you would expect from a portable headset costing about 100.00 usd instead of 15.99 usd from your local Circuit City. The overall sound is mellow, the detail is recessed on the soundstage so nothing is more prominent than anything else. I wouldn’t recommend these for orchestral music but I do recommend them for rock.
A peculiar downside to these is they can reveal the limitations of music compression. Anything below 256kbps, regardless of the file format i.e., ATRAC, MP3, AAC, and you start to notice a space in the music that isn’t filled; not that a beat is missing but more like the musicians aren’t facing you when they play and some notes don’t survive the rebound off the back wall to reach your ears.
