For the user of portable audio devices who likes a video screen for navigating and watching video files, Sony has a new Walkman for you, the NW-A82 series. These are available in two memory sizes, the NW-828 has 8gb and the NW-829 has 16gb. Both sizes are available in three colors; white, pink, and black; and there is also a limited edition NW-A829 in gold available only by order from the Sonystyle website.

This series plays ATRAC, ATRAC Lossless, WMA, MP3, PCM, AAC, and HE-AAC for music files and MPEG-4 along with AVC for video files. The screen is a 2.4 inch (320x 240) TFT LCD display and this has Bluetooth so you can stream files between devices such as headphones, computers, speakers, etc...

With a WMC-NWR1 cable, you can record music from a CD or MD player onto the NW-A828 and NW-A829 in real time. Video can also be recorded from the TV or computer onto the player using a VRC-NW10 stand hooked up to the source and video files can be downloaded from the internet using the Walkman Media Manager.

These have VPT so you can choose such wonderfully named pre-set EQ settings such as stereo, lab, arena, etc...or you can set your own EQ with the 5-band setting. A noise-cancelling option is built-in to these players but remember that this is for specific sets, not just your standard earbuds. The headphone output is the standard Sony 10mW (5mW + 5mW) output and the supplied phones are the MDR-NC022ALP.

These weigh 59 grams and measure 50.2 x 93.6 x 9.3mm and will be available starting March 20th. The 8gb NW-A828 will run 27,800 ? and the 16gb NW-A829 will be 37,800 ?.

Since the NW-A828 and NW-A829 players use the ATRAC codec, though not exclusively, these are only available in Japan where SonicStage survives. I've done a search of the web and I don't see any import shops offering these. I did find an exporter in the Tokyo area who does send these out. If you are wanting either the NW-A828 or NW-A829 digital audio device, you can purchase one from the J-pop store. With EMS shipping included, the 8GB NW-A828 is 335.99 usd and the 16GB NW-A829 is 435.99 usd.
